Heat for Göppingen -
Even more energy from waste

Memorandum of understanding signed

In February 2023, a memoradum of understanding was signed to increase the heat yield from the thermal waste utilisation plant in Göppingen. Seated around the table at the head office of energy utility Energieversorgung Filstal (EVF) were Managing Director of EVS, Martin Bernhart, District Chief Executive of the Göppingen district, Edgar Wolff, and the two Managing Directors of EEW Energy from Waste Göppingen GmbH (EEW), Axel Köhler and Kai Störkel. Based on this agreement, we will explore over the coming nine months whether and under which technical, economic and legal conditions additional heat yield from the Göppingen plant can be achieved.

This memorandum of understanding is an important step towards the heat transition urgently needed to protect the climate.

Plant already supplies heat

Under the existing waste management contract between EEW and the Göppingen district, the Göppingen thermal waste treatment plant already does and will continue to provide reliable district heating to the Klinik am Eichert hospital, the Bergfeld residential estate and the nearby riot-police station. “With the volumes of steam that are currently used to generate electricity at the plant, there is already capacity to supply all of the local utility’s existing district heating connections in Göppingen and even more,” estimates Peter Naab, the head of the main technical division for the corporate association Stadtwerke Göppingen/EVF. He adds: “This would enable savings of at least 40 million kWh per year, based on the needed volumes of natural gas, which would equate to a reduction of least 8,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.”
